Deborah “Debbie” Gail Smith, age 64, died on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kansas.
She was born on February 28, 1961, in Guymon, Oklahoma, to John W. and Kathryn (Hobson) Harper Sr.
In 1979 Deborah graduated from Liberal High School. Soon after she started her career in retail, then later into trucking moving to National Carriers. By the end of her career, she was the Assistant Director of Livestock there.
On November 10, 1984, Deborah was united in marriage to Galynn S. Smith in Las Vegas, Nevada. Deborah was the loving mother of Benjamin “BJ” Smith, and his wife, Amanda and cherished grandmother of Genevieve and Margaret. The bond shared with her family provided her with countless moments of happiness and fulfillment that will be cherished by them forever. She loved the outdoors, spending countless weekends camping and fishing with friends and family.
She is survived by her husband, Galynn Smith of Liberal, Kansas,
Son, BJ Smith and his wife, Amanda of Olathe, Kansas,
Two grandchildren, Genevive and Margaret Smith,
Mother, Kathryn Harper of Liberal, Kansas,
Two brothers, George Harper and his wife, Iva of Liberal, Kansas and
Robert Harper and his wife, Robin of Liberal, Kansas,
Sister-in-law, Jeri Trisler and her husband, Roy of Dodge City, Kansas and
Numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her father, John Harper, Sr.,
Brother, John Harper, Jr.,
Sister, Mary “Kathy” (Harper) Weldeie.
Visitation will be at 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM, Monday, January 26, 2026, at the Hornung Family Funeral Home, 1212 W 2nd Street, Liberal, Kansas.
Funeral Services will be at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the Hornung Family Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor John Moses will be officiating.
A burial will follow at Liberal Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Angels for Animals or Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks WildTrust Fund in care of Hornung Family Funeral Home, 1212 W 2nd Street, Liberal, Kansas.
