Joseph Anthony “Tony” Abeyta Sr., 74, of Liberal, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 27, 2026 at Satanta District Hospital.
He was born on June 10, 1952 in Brighton, Colorado, the son of David and Cleofas (Vercuiaga) Abeyta.
He proudly served his county in the United States Army before building a long and respected career as an operator with Northern Natural Gas.
In 1977 He married the love of his life, Dora Aragon, in Firestone, Colorado. Together they build a life centered on family, love and unwavering devotion. Their marriage of 56 years was Tony’s greatest pride and a testament to their enduring commitment to one another.
Tony embraced life with enthusiasm. Tony enjoyed fishing, boating, camping and jet skiing and the excitement of trips to the casino. He was also a talented guitarist and singer who played in a band in his younger years, bringing joy to family gatherings with music, laughter and unforgettable stories. Those who knew Tony will remember his warm smile, quick wit, generous heart and the way he made everyone feel welcome. Above all else, Tony cherished his family. He was devoted Husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a treasured uncle whose kindness and sense of humor left lasting memories with countless nieces and nephews.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Dora Abeyta of Liberal, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Stacey Lynn Abeyta, his son, Joseph Anthony “Tony” Abeyta Jr., Brothers Louie, Eddie, David and James Abeyta, sisters Dora Calderon, Carmen Ulibarri, Rosie Ramirez and Margaret Martinez.
Funeral Services will be at the Hornung Family Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, July 17, 2026 at 6pm. Pastor Greg Turpin will be presiding. A niche interment will follow on Saturday, July 18 at 10am at Liberal Cemetery, with Military Honors provided by the Lawrence M. Wimmer American Legion Post 80.
Tony’s legacy lives on through the love he shared, the laughter he inspired, and the family he cherished so deeply. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.
