Richard Gale Ooley

Richard Gale Ooley, age 89, died May 29, 2010 at Cañon City, Colorado.He was born on Feb. 22, 1921 in Liberal, Kansas the son of Raymond and Maude (Boyle) Ooley.He was a long time resident of Liberal. He graduated from Liberal High School, Liberal, Kansas.He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, after Pearl Harbor, proudly serving until the end of WWII. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Bar, Atlantic and North African Campaign Bar, Mediterranean and Caribbean Campaign Bar and a Letter of Commendation for his actions under attack.He worked in the automotive parts industry and later owned KOV Auto Supply in Liberal. He devoted his life to his family and church. He was a member of the Western Avenue Church of Christ in Liberal for many years, being instrumental in starting the Western Avenue congregation from the 4th & Grant congregation. He was an avid Bible student and served the church as an elder, teacher, preacher and song leader. He enjoyed working outside, especially planting trees and gardening.On September 28, 1941 he married Rosetta Jean Chapin. She survives.Other survivors include:3 Daughters – Mary Ricks and husband Ed Castle Rock, COSherel Schmidt and husband Jim Turpin, OKBarbara Camper and husband Ted Salem, OR2 Brothers - Raymond Ooley Borger, TX Bob Ooley Boise, ID Jack Ooley Lyons, KS2 Sisters - Jane Manchester Liberal, KS Carolee Pierce Houston, TX 9 Grandchildren, 16 Greatgrandchildren and numerous other family members and friends. Preceded in death by Parents, 1 Daughter Sharon Jean Ooley and 1 Brother Joe Ooley.A Memorial Celebration will be at 2:00 pm Friday, October, 15, 2010 at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home. David Glascock will be presiding. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment will follow in Liberal Cemetery. Military Honors by the U.S. Navy. Friends may sign the register book on Thursday, October 14th, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers and plants Memorial Donations may be sent to Mountain State’s Children’s Home in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home 1212 W 2nd Liberal, KS 67901.
